Are you planning to adopt a bird? If so, you’ll need to pick out a good cage for Polly. This may sound like a pretty simple task, but there is actually quite a lot to consider. A local Wichita, KS vet offers some tips on this below.

Size

Size is one of the first things you’ll want to consider. Bigger is definitely better! Polly will spend a lot of time in her cage, so it’s very important that it be large enough for her to feel comfortable in. You’ll also want room for dishes, toys, and perches. Our recommendation? Get the biggest cage you have room for. Keep in mind that this is a one-time expense, so it’s worth splurging on.

Material

Don’t buy a cage without finding out what it’s made of. Unfortunately, some lesser-quality ones are made with things that are toxic to our feathered pals, such as zinc. If you’re not sure, err on the side of caution.

Shape

Bird cages are not one-size-fits-all, and they aren’t one-shape-fits-all, either. The shape Polly’s cage should be will depend on what kind of bird your winged pal is. Parrots, for example, need lots of room for climbing, while finches need more horizontal space, so they can fly from one end to the other.

Extras

You may pay a bit more for things like removable tops and easily-accessible cleaning doors, but these features will be well worth it in the long run. If you have to choose between saving up and cutting corners, go with the savings account.

Accessories

Although most birdcages come with a perch or two, birds actually need a variety of perches. Polly should have some that are different sizes, strengths, and textures. This helps her with grooming, resting, and playing, and will help keep her feet and legs strong and healthy. Just be sure to get the right sizes. Your feathered buddy will also need lots of fun toys, such as hanging toys, puzzle toys, and foraging toys. Ask your vet for specific advice on this.

Ownership

You may be able to get a used cage pretty cheap. Saving money is always great, but take care here. If the cage’s previous occupant was sick, Polly could contract that illness. Proceed with caution!
