April is Farm Animals Day! As you may know, farm animals are definitely in our wheelhouse here at Hodes Veterinary Health Center. We’re more than happy to celebrate our hooved friends. A Wichita, KS vet suggests a few fun activities you can do with your little ones in this article.

History

Farm Animals Day was first created in 2005, in honor of Gandhi and the love and compassion he showed all animals. Today, it is often used to spread awareness about the poor conditions many farm animals face. This is a good time to talk to your children about the importance of treating all of our animal companions with kindness and compassion.

Day At The Zoo

While technically zoos don’t focus on farm animals, they’re still a great family-friendly activity. A day at Sedgwick Zoo would not be inappropriate! If your little ones are interested in animals, you may want to look into some of the events the zoo puts on for children.

Arts and Crafts

Arts and crafts benefit children in many ways. They’re also great at keeping little ones occupied, and just helping them explore creativity. A farm-animal themed coloring book would definitely not be inappropriate.

Sponsor

There are many rescue organizations out there helping rescued farm animals live their lives in peace and comfort. Many of them rely on donations and volunteer work. You may even be able to sponsor a specific animal. Have the kids choose one!

4-H Clubs

The 4-H Club has been around for over 120 years. They have helped a whopping 6 million children, and provide wonderful services and opportunities. Kids may participate in many different activities, from workshops, camps, fairs, and competitions. The organization has also recently branched out into STEM subjects. You can learn more about the organization at their website here.

Webcams

If there are no animal sanctuaries or petting farms nearby, bring them to you! There are some great webcams to check out. (Tip: Try the Sunflower Farm one here. Explore.org also has some great ones here.)

Movie Night

Why not end the day with a fun, farm-themed movie? The Adventures Of Milo And Otis, Babe, and Charlotte’s Web are all great kids’ classics. Barnyard, Chicken Run, and Home On The Range are also good options for little ones.
